The 2007 World Series is set to get underway on Wednesday night when the Rockies and Red Sox square off from Boston. The hosts are a -210 favorite to take Game 1 behind Josh Beckett, and are nearly as big of chalk to win the series.

This World Series offers something old and something new. The Boston Red Sox are familiar with the spotlight and playing for the title. They last won the World Series in 2004. The Colorado Rockies have never reached this far in the postseason. Furthermore, at the beginning of this season, many people mentioned the Red Sox as legitimate World Series contenders. At the beginning of this season, many people mentioned the Rockies as legitimate bottom feeders in the National League West.
The Rockies are a young franchise and an even younger team in 2007. They have been built through the inexpensive manner of scouting and diligent player development. The Red Sox stars are household names: David “Big Papi” Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, and most recently, Daisuke Matsuzaka, are all well-known in baseball circles.
These two clubs took dramatically different regular-season paths in 2007. The Red Sox built a huge early lead -- they led the Yankees by 14 1/2 games at one point -- saw most of that lead vanish, but then held on, breaking the Yankees' nine-year stranglehold on the AL East championship. They went on to sweep the Angels in the division series, but had to stage a remarkable recovery from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Cleveland Indians in the ALCS.
The Rockies were nowhere early and then went on a late-season tear that was unprecedented in the annals of late-season tears. They eventually won 21 of 22 games, including the postseason, but they had to go a Game 163, a one-game playoff to edge the San Diego Padres for the NL Wild Card berth.
There will be one unique factor to watch as this Series opens Wednesday night at Fenway Park. The Rockies will have had an eight-day cooling-off period between their last game and the beginning of the World Series. How will this affect them? Will they just be completely rested? Or will they be somewhat rusted? Stay tuned.
With the two aces on the hill, it is somewhat surprising that the price is as high as it is. Beckett has been solid in the postseason, giving up just three earned runs in 23-innings, winning three times. Frances is 2-0 in the playoffs with three earned runs allowed in 12-2/3 innings.
Here are two of the top trends for Game 1:
COLORADO is 25-7 (+22.2 Units) against the money line when playing against a good team (Win Pct. 54% to 62%) in the second half of the season this season. The average score was COLORADO 6.0, OPPONENT 3.5 - (Rating = 5*)
BOSTON is 17-3 (+14.7 Units) against the money line vs. NL teams scoring 4.8 or more runs/game on the season over the last 3 seasons. The average score was BOSTON 6.2, OPPONENT 3.8 - (Rating = 1*)
